2. 2. Softball Season Gets Under Way
NWT Softball is sliding into the season after successfully hosting two Learn to Play clinics. The first held in Yellowknife on May 9th and 10th had more than 70 participants engage in fun activities delivered by Tracy Blanchard, Head Coach for the 2009 Women’s Alberta Summer Games team. The second was recently held in Hay River on May 30th, where Jackie Desilets from Softball Alberta worked with a group of eager children. If your community wishes to be part of the Learn to Play program, contact Kalie Dobson via email kdobson@sportnorth.com or 1-800-661-0797, ext. 8339 for more information about NWT Softball membership and benefits.

3. 2010 Arctic Winter Games Athlete Selection Process
The Government of the Northwest Territories conducted a review of all multi-sport games to determine a basis for assessing the appropriate level of investment and quantify what results can be achieved as a result of the investment level; basically asking the questions “Do these Games cost too much? and “What are we getting out of it?”. This review focused on the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Games, Western Canada Games and the North American Indigenous Games.
Sport North received the final report along with a list of recommendations in April 2009 and the Sport & Recreation Council has confirmed that Sport North will administer the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. Since that time, Sport North has been in consultation with the Territorial Sport Organizations to determine how athletes will be selected for these Games. As it stands now, the athlete selection process will not begin until the fall 2009. The details of how each sport will select their athletes are still being worked out.

5. 5. Sports Update
A team of Cadet Air Rifle shooters attended to the National Cadet Marksmanship Championships in Charlottown, PEI (May 2009). The team was made up of five shooters from across the NWT. The team finished the prone competition near the bottom of the field, coming in 13th out of 15 teams, beating Yukon and Newfoundland. In the standing matches, Yellowknife's Master Warrant Officer Katherine Robinson of 2837 RCACC came in second out of the top 125 Cadet shooters in Canada, and brought home the silver medal - a first for the NWT at the nationals.
Members of the Fort Smith Paddling Club took an Advanced Wilderness and Remote First Aid course on the banks of the Slave River (May 25-28). The 40-hour course was taught almost entirely outdoors, and included a lot of practical hands-on experience. One of the bigger scenarios, held late at night, included several wet and hypothermic victims, and rescuers had to extract an unconscious kayaker from his boat, and later carry him up a very steep hill on a makeshift stretcher. The course was excellent. The students benefited from the experience of instructors, Blair Doyle and Lyse Boyce who are both paddlers with extensive experience in search and rescue.
