Awards
 Program

The Sport North Awards are given out each year to recognize athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers for their performance and contribution to sport in the NWT. The awards play a valuable role in supporting athletic success and recognizing the NWT's growing talent.  The nomination process has two submission dates. The first deadline (March 15) asks for basic information about the person being nominated. The second deadline (April 1) requests detailed information about their sporting accomplishments.  The Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
 
In 1977, the first awards were presented for the Contributor to Sport. Additional awards were added in years following: 1978 - Athlete of the Year, 1980 - Team of the Year, 1989 - Coach of the Year, 1992 - Junior Athlete of the Year, 1994 - Official of the Year, 2001 - Youth Male and Female Athlete of the Year and the Corporate Contributor to Sport and 2009 - Community Volunteer Award. The names of previous award winners are posted on the Sport North web site (www.sportnorth.com). These awards are presented annually to recognize the significant contributions of individuals who are active in sport in the Northwest Territories. The awards are given in recognition of achievements and accomplishments during the past year.

Process:
The Awards Committee is responsible for selecting candidates to be acknowledged in accordance with the following guidelines. The successful candidates are invited to attend the "Awards Banquet" so that they may be recognized.
 
Categories:
The 7 categories to be awarded annually are:
* ­ Team          * ­ Coach         *­  Official        * ­ Athlete        *  Contributor          *  Corporate          * Community Volunteer
 
The Awards Committee reserves the right to solicit nominees with the support of the respective Territorial Sport Organizations and/or to forego presenting an award in any given category if the nominees put forth are not deemed appropriate.
 
Team of the Year
This award will be presented to an amateur team that has excelled in their sport at various levels of competition. Eligibility: Any amateur team competing in a recognized event sanctioned by their Territorial Sport Organization (maximum team size of twenty (20)). Individual sports are eligible to be nominated for this award, but will only receive merit for their results in the team event of competitions.
 
Coach of the Year
This award will recognize the individual that has displayed success and dedication in developing their program and athletes at any level throughout the past year. Eligibility: Any certified coach who has resided in the Northwest Territories for the past year; has been responsible for coaching an amateur team(s) and/or individual(s) at any level and is a member of a Territorial Sport Organization.
 
Official of the Year
This award will be presented to the official who has shown dedication of his or her time towards developing their officiating skills and has been responsible for officiating amateur teams and/or individuals at any level throughout the past year. Eligibility: Any certified official who has resided in the Northwest Territories for the past year; has been responsible for officiating amateur team(s) and/or individual(s) at any level and is a member of a Territorial Sport Organization.
 
Athlete of the Year
This award will be presented to one male and one female athlete in three age categories: Senior (over 21 years of age), Junior (16 – 21 years of age) and Youth (under 16 years of age) – as of December 31, 2010. These individuals will have excelled in their sport at various levels of competition. Eligibility: Any athlete competing on a team or individual sport in the Northwest Territories and is a member of a Territorial Sport Organization. Athletes on National teams or National Development teams (carded) are NOT eligible for this award.
 
Contributor to Sport
This award recognizes an individual who has, over a period of time, contributed in an extraordinary fashion to sport as a whole or made a major contribution to all amateur sport.
 
Corporate Contributor to Sport                     
This award recognizes businesses/organizations that, over a period of time, have supported and contributed to sport in the NWT.

Community Contributor  *
NEW*
This award recognizes a coach, official, mentor or volunteer administrator that has been dedicated to the growth and develoment of amateur sport at the community level.
 
 
MEMORIAL AWARDS
 
Dennis Crane Memorial - Official of the Year Award - Named in memory of the late Dennis Crane who played a major role in the sport of badminton, not only in the NWT, but also across Canada.   Dennis was the President of Sport North (1977-79 and 1995-96), a board member of the NWT Badminton Association, Badminton Canada and Sport North, as well as a long time coach and official.
 
Ruth Inch Memorial - Contributor to Sport Award - Named in memory of the late Ruth Inch who contributed to sport in many ways; as a coach, official, administrator and fundraiser.
 
Mary Beth Miller Memorial - Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award - Named in memory of the late Mary Beth Miller who excelled in the sport of biathlon. Mary Beth represented the NWT and Canada at various major events such as the Arctic Winter Games, World University Games and the North American Canadian Biathlon Championships.

Delma Kisoun Memorial - Community Contributor Award
- Named in memory of the late Delma Kisoun who began volunteering for Northern Games at 15 years of age. becoming a trusted official with Arctic Sports and the Arctic Winter Games movement.  She was a board member of Sport North for 3 years (2002-2005) and served as the Marketing Chairperson for that time.
 
 
NOMINATION PROCESS
 
The nomination process is divided into 2 parts; Part A includes the basic information about the person being nominated and Part B includes detailed information about their athletic performance and contribution. Nominations must be complete and accurate before being considered by the Awards Committee. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
 
Criteria for Nominations
1.     Nominees must be a resident of the Northwest Territories.
2.     Nominees must be a member in good standing with their Territorial Sport Organization.
3.     Nominees who live temporarily in other locations for educational or training purposes are eligible for nomination provided their primary residence is declared as being the NWT.
4.     Some nominations will be judged on their performance from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. Others will be judged over a longer period of time (not restricted to one year).
