Richmond, BC (May 7, 2016) – Celena Hoeve made NWT Gymnastics proud by capturing a silver medal on beam at the 2016 Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships. The Championships were hosted by Gymnastics BC and Delta Gymnastics in Richmond. BC from May 5th - 7th, 2016. Hoeve is an 18 year old gymnast who trains at the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club and has competed at the 2010 & 2012 Arctic Winter Games as well as the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.

Hoeve competed against some of the big powerhouses from Western Canada. The competition included participants from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon. Hoeve placed 15th overall at the championships, while securing the silver medal on beam Thursday with a score of 8.925 out of 10. The last time NWT Gymnastics won on the National Gymnastics scene was in 2006, when John Tram captured a gold at the Western Canada Gymnastics Championships and bronze at Canadian National Championships, both medals on the rings. Hoeve is the first female to earn a national medal for the Northwest Territories.

With her experience from the 2012 Arctic Winter Games, winning a silver ulu on beam, along with her experience at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, her first National experience – Hoeve gained the patience, valuable experience and talent to shine at the Championships. With her silver medal, Hoeve is looking forward to returning to Yellowknife to celebrate the win. Now with her medal in hand, Hoeve just might be thinking about extending her gymnastics career while starting at Queen’s University in the fall.
