Yellowknife, NT (October 4, 2016) – The Sport North Federation announces six (6) individuals have been elected to the NWT Sport Hall of Fame, one athlete, one builder and four individuals in the team category.

"Sport North is proud to welcome these seven NWT sport icons as inductees" said Sport North Executive Director Doug Rentmeister. "Their contributions to sport in the North are well documented and their election to the NWT Sport Hall of Fame is richly deserved".

In the builder category, Lynn Fowler was elected. Fowler began organizing broomball in the NWT in 1979 and has continued for over thirty years. Over the years, Fowler established the men's and women's league, as well as being the chairperson of the 1988 Canadian National Broomball Championships. He has dedicated his time to sport and has exemplified what being a volunteer means in the North, embracing the title of "Mr. Broomball".

Sarah Daitch, elected to the athlete category, represented Canada as a Cross-Country National Ski team member. Daitch raced at a number of high profile events including Junior World Championships, World University Games, World Cross-Country Ski Championships and multiple World Cups.

In the builder category, the 1983 Elks Corby Cup team of Doug Bothamley, Klaus Shoenne, Don Sian and Randy Waddell were elected. On March 19, 1983, the team took home the Elks Canadian Curling Championships honours, becoming the first Yellowknife curling rink to win a national curling title.

The 2016 NWT Sport Hall of Fame Induction celebrations begin on Friday, November 18, 2016. These seven sport icons will be enshrined among other great legends of the NWT Sport Community at the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314.
