YELLOWKNIFE, NT., July 25th 2022 – Team NT announces that Mali Straker will be the opening ceremonies flag bearer for Team NT at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ontario.

Opening Ceremonies will take place August 6, 2022 at 8:00 pm in the Meridian Centre, St. Catharines.

Mali Straker is a role model to all athletes coming from the Northwest Territories. She exemplifies what hard work and sacrifice is needed to achieve athletic goals. From a young age Mali knew she had a dream to play university basketball. She has trained for countless hours and sacrificed spending time with family and friends to achieve this goal. She is always the first one in the gym, last one to leave and is always eager for more court time.

Mali’s hard work and dedication paid off in the spring of 2021 when Mali signed with Laurentian University in Ontario. Mali has become one of very few athletes to play Usports basketball from the Northwest Territories. Mali excelled in her rookie season, being a starting player in many games and being a valuable piece to her team.  She also was an academic all Canadian. In 2022/23 Mali made the decision to transfer schools and will be a part of the St. Francis Xavier University Women’s basketball team.

Mali’s dedication to the sport, and leadership abilities on and off the floor makes her the perfect athlete to be the Team NT Flag Bearer.

Team NT headed to the 2022 Canada Summer Games will feature 68 athletes, 21 coaches and managers, and 11 mission staff.
