YELLOWKNIFE, NT – Team NT announces that Naomi Yukon will be the flag bearer for Team NT at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, SK.

Opening Ceremonies will take place at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex at 7:00 pm on Friday, August 9.

Naomi Yukon comes from the small community of Deline, NT where she started playing basketball at a young age.  From the beginning Naomi has been dedicated to mastering the fundamentals of the game and she is beginning to seeing her hard work pay off.

Naomi has represented the Northwest Territories multiple times, most recently at the 2016 and 2018 Arctic Winter Games.  In 2017 Naomi made the difficult decision to leave her home community and live in Yellowknife full-time to pursue her dreams of one day playing college basketball.

Joining the Eagles Basketball Program upon her arrival in Yellowknife was only the beginning of Naomi’s journey towards her college basketball dream; she has also attended many club tournaments and represented the territory with her club team.  It was proven how great of an athlete, and mature leader Naomi was when her peers voted her as team captain of the Northwest Territories 2019 Western Canada Summer Games Female Basketball team

“Naomi is a bright, young mature athlete who stays out of trouble and dedicates herself to the sport of basketball and her school work.  She is a quiet leader who leads by example on the court and speaks up when she needs to. She is an excellent role model for the younger generation in her home community of Deline” describe Naomi’s coach, and manager of the WCSG Female Basketball team, Aaron Wells.

Team NT Chef de Mission, Rita Mercredi, says, “when reviewing the nomination for Naomi to be our flag bearer it was clear that she embodied the characteristics of what it means to be a Team NT athlete.  She is dedicated to her sport as well as her studies, she is a role model and very respected by her peers. We know she will carry the Northwest Territories flag with pride.”

Team NT headed to the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will feature 127 athletes, 21 coaches, 9 managers, and 10 mission staff, a Chef de Mission and an Assistant Chef de Mission.
