November 17, 2014 (Yellowknife, NT) - Yellowknife’s own Andrew Matthews has been invited to compete in his fourth World Cup event this December. Matthews will be jumping a man made Big Air jump in the middle of Istanbul, Turkey. The event is set to take place on December 20th. Athletes will be judged on a best of two jumps format based on difficulty and execution while they sore across the 60 foot gap. Matthews was invited to this World Cup as a result of his strong competition results in the 2013/14 season including a top 10 placement at the Nationals.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Canada and the Northwest Territories at what promises to be an amazing event,” commented Matthews. When asked how he feels about snowboarding in front of the expected 30,000 spectators Matthews continued “I love the rush and energy you get from competing in front of a big crowd! It’s going to be fun to challenge myself in that type of environment again.”

Matthews is currently training in Austria to get ready for the competition. He’s kicking off the 2014-15 season by training on the European glaciers which open up earlier than the slopes in North American. Matthews will be working on developing more technical tricks required to do well in such high level competitions as World Cups and the Burton Open events this season.

Matthews hopes that his accomplishments will encourage other young people from the Northwest Territories to follow their dreams. “I hope that my snowboarding career will inspire others to believe in themselves in the face of adversity and become the best they can be – whether in sport, art, academics or simply living life to the fullest.”
